I am extremely concerned about Bill 5 and the proposed legislation on creating Special Economic Zones (SEZs). If this bill passes, I do not trust the current government to safeguard our environment or Indigenous rights. We've seen far too often how the Ford government's policies and proposals threaten our natural heritage and Indigenous concerns. E.g., the proposed highway 413 will destroy 2,000 acres of prime agricultural land as well as parts of the Greenbelt.
And we saw how Ford was quite willing to remove land from the Greenbelt despite a promise not to, and only backed down after journalists revealed how many of his developer friends were set to benefit from that move and a public outcry ensued. And the "Ring of Fire" proposal is by no means supported by all the Indigenous nations in that area.
The document I'll upload from LAND, "Briefing Notes" lays out in detail why SEZs should not be allowed. The climate crisis is only worsening, but this government behaves as if it doesn't even exist. And Bill 5 provides nothing re accountability or guardrails re SEZs.
