As a citizen of Ontario, I expect the provincial government to uphold its inherent responsibility to work with the Indigenous peoples of this province. This means honouring the treaties, consulting before a project is defined, informing on every step of the process, and working to ensure that Indigenous commmunities will benefit at every level. Special Economic Zones are the antithesis to this collaborative process and invite denial of rights, colonial thinking, corruption, disrespect for the environment, for due process, and for the people of Ontario.
I truly believe that these Special Economic Zones will benefit a few corporations and cause greater harm and destruction of the environment and disrespect for the people of this province, especially Indigenous people.
There is truly no good reason to enact the Special Economic Zones, as they bypass important rules and guidelines that were developed over decades, with good intentions and logic. Good government knows how to work with existing laws and governing practices. The Ford government is demonstrating a lack of respect for democratic practices and continues the missmanagement of funds and projects, which will leave this province in a mess for decades to come. Special Economic Zones are a very bad next step, for a government that doesn't know how to govern.
Please do not adopt Special Economic Zones in Ontario!
