Thank you for the opportunity to comment on ERO 025-1077’s proposal concerning Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Ontario.

As a resident and member of an environmental nonprofit active in protecting local ecosystems and community well-being, I wish to express my serious concerns about the introduction and expansion of SEZs.

SEZs threaten to override established land use planning, conservation policies, and agricultural protections that Ontario communities depend on. These zones typically relax environmental regulations, accelerate land conversion, and encourage intensive development, jeopardizing irreplaceable natural habitats, farmland, and community character.

Our communities have spent decades building responsible land use systems grounded in public consultation and stewardship—SEZs undermine this progress and set a dangerous precedent for sidelining local voices.

Environmental devastation is a serious risk. Past examples of economic zones led to fragmentation of habitat, increased sprawl, loss of biodiversity, and severe strain on local water and air quality. For communities already facing pressures from climate change and growth, the introduction of SEZs could multiply these threats, stripping away the tools we have to defend local interests.

Furthermore, bypassing democratic planning processes reduces transparency and accountability, marginalizing municipal leadership and public input. The economic benefits touted by SEZ proponents are speculative and often come at the expense of long-term community resilience and sustainability.

I strongly urge the provincial government to reconsider the implementation of SEZs. Ontario’s future depends on policies that put community health, environmental integrity, and democratic planning at the forefront.

Thank you.
