I am concerned that this bill will follow Bill 60 ( the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025 (Schedule 16)), which was rushed through with minimal public consultation and will shift water and wastewater services into corporate-style public entities.
I do NOT support private ownership (i.e., privatization). Privatization of public health, of the blue bin, etc, has negative consequences. Why is that being done with water, which is a human right?
This bill is not enough to ensure how these water corporations will function. Please close all privatization loopholes in this proposal. There is currently nothing in this proposal that actually guarantees public ownership. This bill needs that language.
Public ownership alone will also not actually stop privatization of drinking water utilities. Thus, this bill also must prohibit private management, private operation, private governance influence, and private financing and profit extraction.
This proposal will keep water systems under a corporate-style structure. It will take decisions away from public oversight. Corporate boards need to be held to the same transparency as municipal councils. Their decisions about water rates, infrastructure, and operations must be visible.
There are no financial rules in this bill.
Please truly protect public water by ensuring that there will be no role for private entities in managing or operating water systems, no private financing or investor involvement, no profit-making from public water, and full transparency and public accountability built into legislation.
The Ford government has been pushing bills through, often without listening to the public. I have seen multiple bills be accepted with zero changes despite 100s or 1000s of comments. That is not meaningful consultation. Please do not repeat that with this bill. Keep water public for our present and future generations. Thank you
