The biggest threat to the endangered Redside Dace is habitat loss, and urban and agricultural development. The proposed amendments to their habitat protections serve only to undermine the recovery of this species and perpetuate the harmful actions that have put them in peril.
Reducing the timeframe associated with site occupation to 10 years harms conservation actions like site remediation and reintroduction. Shortening this time span will only shrink the critical habitat of a precarious species, further jeopardizing the future of this species. Given this provincial government's poor history of protecting the environment and its continuous disdain for biodiversity--as highlighted by the attempt to destroy the Greenbelt and the harmful development of Highway 413, these proposed changes look like another attempt from the Ford government to line the pockets of developers. Continuous attempts to disarm and weaken the Ontario's environmental protections and the Endangered Species Act show that even in the face of the duel crisis of climate change and biodiversity loss, corruption knows no bounds within Queen's Park.
