Trapping policies must be guided by science, ethics, and the public interest—not short-term profits. We call on the government to take the following steps:
• Transparency first: Release all scientific documentation, environmental assessments, and supporting data. Extend the public comment period so citizens can review the evidence and respond meaningfully.
• Put animal welfare at the core: Trapping laws must reflect the latest, peer-reviewed science and protect animals from unnecessary suffering.
• Stop trading lives for profit: Small financial gains from the fur trade should never come at the expense of animal protection, public safety, or ecological health.
• Protect keystone species: Beavers build wetlands, support biodiversity, and regulate water systems. Their habitats on Crown and private lands must be safeguarded from indiscriminate or out-of-season trapping.
• Ensure accountability: Strong reporting and regulatory oversight are essential to keep trapping practices within legal and ethical standards.

This consultation is a chance to choose science over secrecy, welfare over cruelty, and ecosystems over short-term gain. We urge the government to act responsibly and protect the public interest, wildlife, and the environment we all depend on.
