The laws governing trapping…

The laws governing trapping in Ontario are already too lax. Trapping already causes a great deal of suffering to 'target' animals and also to non-target animals the industry calls 'trash'. When an animal chews off their own limbs to escape the trapping industry calls it 'wring off'. This is not an industry that seems to care about the suffering, injury or torment of animals. Allowing more trapping and more methods of trapping, means more animals will suffer and animal protection is lessened.
As another example the trapping of beavers and for castoreum sales ... right now, the season for trapping beavers is already September through April and additional instances if they are seen to be causing problems. These proposals indicate an open season the rest of the year on Crown land which means little respite for these animals. Beavers are an important species for our environment; this is well known and the impact of trapping more and more often does not bode well for our environment!
Before making these changes the Ontario government should be providing evidence to support the changes it wants to make and animal welfare should be a priority and not considered a hindrance.
As I mentioned above, the standards for trapping are already too lax and the current standards are way too low; this new proposed scheme will lower the standards further and this has no place in a civilized society.
