I do not agree with the expansion of trapping and the reduction of regulatory and administrative burdens for trappers without proper research and data to support it. I see no evidence of proper research and am concerned about the impact this will have on innocent animals and the fragile ecosystems we should be protecting.

Beavers are a keystone species that is vital to healthy habitats and is already in a depleted state. The Government should safeguard these creatures on public crown land, especially during the closed season. Healthy forests and wetlands are essential for Canada, especially since we depend on our wild places for resources, tourism, and recreation.

I also believe that laws around trapping should prioritize animal welfare and also be accompanied by robust oversight to ensure animals are treated humanely and rules are followed accordingly. This oversight should also include proper consequences for those who break the law and fail to conduct operations in a proper manner.

Small financial gains for the trapping and fur industry (Which is an outdated and generally distasteful industry, the majority of Canadians do not agree with, hence the reduction in fur being sold as a fashion item) should not come at the expense of animal welfare or the reduction in ecological protections and expense of our natural habitats.

The beaver is supposed to be a beacon of Canada's wild places, but for too long, they have been trapped and hunted. Despite this being a historical fact in Canada, it does not need to continue or be expanded upon.

I would ask you to ensure proper research and evidence support any actions, and to extend the public comment period so that the public can review the evidence and offer its opinion. In my opinion the current requirements and administrative regulations should not be expanded.
