I am writing to strongly oppose the Ontario government’s proposed changes to trapping regulations. While these are framed as efforts to “streamline rules” and “reduce burdens,” in reality they would weaken protections for animals, ecosystems, and public transparency.
Allowing the sale of raw beaver castoreum, reducing reporting requirements for fur dealers, expanding lethal methods of killing, and permitting beaver trapping on Crown land during closed seasons all raise serious concerns. Beavers are keystone species essential for wetlands, biodiversity, and water systems, and loosening oversight only prioritizes economic interests over ecological balance and animal welfare.
Equally troubling is the absence of scientific evidence or environmental assessments to support these changes. Without transparency and accountability, the public cannot properly evaluate the risks.
I urge you to reject these harmful proposals and instead strengthen protections for Ontario’s wildlife and ecosystems.
