I strongly oppose the proposed changes to Ontario’s trapping regulations.

The government’s framing of these changes as “streamlining” and “reducing administrative burdens” does not reflect the very real risks they pose to animal welfare, environmental protection, and public accountability.

Animal Welfare:
Expanding trapping methods, including permitting pistols after dark, raises serious concerns about suffering, public safety, and accuracy.

Even so-called “humane” traps can cause stress, pain, or prolonged injury to both target and non-target animals.

Weakening protections in this way puts animals at unnecessary risk.

Environmental Protection:
Beavers are a keystone species that create wetlands, regulate water systems, and support biodiversity.

Allowing beaver trapping on Crown land during the closed season would disrupt ecosystems, destroy habitats, reduce biodiversity, and damage Ontario’s natural water systems.

These are long-term ecological harms that cannot be justified by short-term economic gains.

Transparency and Oversight:
Reducing reporting requirements for fur dealers undermines transparency and makes it harder to monitor compliance with humane and environmental standards.

Strong oversight is essential to safeguard both wildlife and the public interest.

Lack of Evidence:
The Environmental Registry posting claims that environmental consequences will be “minimal” but provides no data, scientific studies, or environmental assessments to substantiate this.

Without access to supporting documentation, Ontarians cannot meaningfully assess the impacts of these proposals.

This lack of transparency is part of a troubling pattern in recent environmental decision-making.

In summary, small financial opportunities for the fur trade should never outweigh the protection of Ontario’s animals, ecosystems, and public accountability.

I urge the government to withdraw these proposals unless and until full scientific documentation and environmental impact assessments are provided, and proper safeguards for animal welfare and biodiversity are guaranteed.
