I am against your proposals and would argue that these are not widely supported by the majority of Canadians. Whatever the supposed gains for the fur trade do not outweigh the potential damage to the environment, to animal protection and rights and to the safety of the public and can only do more damage to Canada's reputation.
Allowing the sale of raw beaver castoreum by licensed fur dealers: This controversial economic opportunity is neither large enough that would benefit Canadians at large, nor is it necessary with all the cruelty-free alternatives. The market is niche, highly controversial and unnecessary.
Reduce reporting requirements for licensed fur dealers, eliminating mandatory annual reporting to the ministry:
Fur dealer reports are an important regulatory tool for ensuring compliance with humane trapping standards and environmental protections. Loosening these requirements reduces transparency and public accountability, and lead to increase risks of abuse.
Expand methods for killing trapped furbearing mammals, including permitting trappers to use pistols after dark:
How do you propose to monitor this? Not only is this extremely unethical and inhumane, it raises concerns about public safety, lead to animal suffering, and opens the door to serious abuse. How can you possibly justify the pain and suffering inflicted on a trapped animal?
Permit trapping of beavers on Crown land during the closed season to protect property or infrastructure:
The removal of beavers on public lands can only lead to the disruption of the ecosystems, the waterways they regulate, and the biodiversity that these ecosystems create, with long tern negative consequences.
In general expanding trapping and allowing more methods for killing increases the risk of suffering for animals and set a highly dangerous precedent with little economic gains.
None of these proposed changes deal with the unnecessary nature of this dying industry. Utilize funds for retraining, education and job growth in industries that actually have value and benefit the majority of Canadians.
The government must provide full scientific documentation, environmental impact assessments, and data to support its claims.
