My comment relates to a Provincially Significant Wetlands (PSW) located in the township of Selwyn, Peterborough County known as the "Snelgrove Brook PSW". My comment is relevant to all PSW's in Peterborugh County but more specifically to the Snelgrove Brook PSW as the Selwyn township has a plan to create a trail through this wetland to the detriment of the PSW and the local environment. Moreover cutting down trees, disrupting water flow, negatively impacting the wildlife especially a Deer wintering habitat will have a negative impact on the the environment including climate change.
Like all other development within a PSW it is time to ban all development, including trails within a PSW in Peterborough County. Municipalities should not be given a pass when it comes to environmental damaging proposals within PSW's.
The township has plenty of trails and this plan to build another trail through a PSW is unnecessary and damaging to the environment and the climate. In fact the a comment from a Selwyn Councillor (Gerry Herron) in the Selwyn Fall 2021 communicator proves this point.
"Did you know that we have an overabundance of parks and trails in our community? Most people don't! We have over 5 hectares of parkland per 1,000 persons which is higher than the industry standard of 4 hectares per 1,000 persons. I recommend getting out and exploring all that Selwyn has to offer. There are a lot of hidden gems out there! "
