The sections of the Mining Act relating to the recovery of minerals, and a new regulation (O. Reg. 463/24) under ss. 176 (1) of the Mining Act to support interested applicants to recover valuable minerals from tailings and mine wastes in Ontario are expected to take effect on July 1, 2025.

A new regulation has been made specifying the circumstances under which the Minister of Natural Resources (“Minister”) may issue an order to make a permitting decision in place of a conservation authority or undertake a review of a conservation authority permitting decision.

An approval was issued to amend the Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise) No. 3230-9C4H7L for PLAINTREE SYSTEMS INC., a manufacturer of aerospace sensors, retro and antique appliances, specialty steel structures for architectural and industrial applications, and hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, located in Arnprior, Ontario.

Quinton Steel (Wellington) Limited requested to withdraw their application for an Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise). The application is considered withdrawn and no approval was issued.

The Permit to Take Water No. 1411-DCGNEK was issued to Agnico Eagle Mines Limited on January 2, 2025, to renew the permit 7262-D3CLC9. Water will be taken from one (1) well for industrial purposes at the Detour Lake Mine Site, located approximately 185 kilometres northeast of Cochrane in Ontario.

Approval has been granted to amend the Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise) No. 5027-BYRM7B for Convertus Canada Ltd., for the operation of a composting facility processing organics located in the City of London, County of Middlesex, Ontario.

The variance is approved.

The Permit to Take Water No. P-300-7290428677 was issued to REDTAIL INC. on December 30, 2024, to renew Permit to Take Water No. 1682-9KYQ96 for golf course irrigation purposes. Water will be taken from one pond in Port Stanley, Ontario, for 10 years.

The ministry has issued a new Environmental Compliance Approval (industrial sewage) to Hydro One Networks Inc. for stormwater management works to serve the Picton Transmission station located at 1481 County Road 5, Prince Edward County, Ontario.

An Environmental Compliance Approval (air & noise) with the Limited Operational Flexibility has been granted to Magna Powertrain Inc. operating as Unimotion-Gear, a manufacturing facility for drive plates/flexplates and reluctor wheels, located in the Town of Aurora, Ontario.

Permit to Take Water No. 0280-DAPJU9 as issued to Bunge Canada Holdings I Inc. on December 30, 2024, to renew Permit to Take Water No. 1177-B8ETJL. Water will be taken from the Hamilton Harbour (Lake Ontario) for industrial cooling water purposes, located at 515 Victoria Avenue North in the City of Hamilton, Ontario.

Certificate of Property Use No. 3110-D3LQDL for 300 Bayview Avenue, Toronto was issued to 1405768 Ontario Limited, as part of their development plans for the site.

The Director of Exploration has made a decision on the exploration permit application PR-24-000209 to 5042078 Ontario Inc. for early exploration activities.

The decision is to issue the mineral exploration permit.

On December 4, the Affordable Energy Act, 2024 received Royal Assent, enabling the Ministry of Energy and Electrification (the ministry) to develop Ontario’s first Integrated Energy Plan, make it cost-effective to connect to the electricity grid, help reduce energy use to save money, and support the growth of Electric Vehicle adoption in Ontario.

Permit to Take Water No. P-300-7285620708 has been issued to Lafarge Canada Inc. renewing Permit to Take Water No. 2278-9N5Q6S for aggregate washing purposes. Water will be taken from one pond and one well at the New Lowell Pit, located in Clearview, Ontario for five years.

On December 20, 2024, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing filed a Minister's Zoning Order with the Registrar of Regulations as Ontario Regulation (O. Reg.) 561/24 in the City of Toronto. The City of Toronto requested that the Minister consider making the Zoning Order. 

Approval is granted for a new Environmental Compliance Approval (waste disposal site - transfer/processing) for Waste Management of Canada Corporation to develop and operate a new enclosed non-hazardous recycling facility to receive solid, non-hazardous recyclables, (blue box recyclables), including various plastics, metals, and paper/fibres.

On December 20, 2024, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing revoked Ontario Regulation (O. Reg.) 337/22. The Ministry of Infrastructure requested that the Minister consider revoking the regulation.

On December 20, 2024, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing filed a Minister's Zoning Order with the Registrar of Regulations as Ontario Regulation (O. Reg.) 563/24 in the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. The Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury requested that the Minister consider making the Zoning Order.

The Ministry is proceeding with changes to the maximum rating of the breakaway device for relaxing cable restraints (RCR) used for trapping in Ontario. We are not proceeding with changes to the minimum loop diameter at this time.
