The proposed change to regulations represents a step backwards in animal welfare and conservation best practices in Ontario. Permitting the use of inhumane traps goes against mountains of evidence that have shown the significant harm caused by these devices. Such traps do not belong in a civilized society.
Furthermore, loosening protection for beavers is a mistake in terms of conservation. As important species in our ecosystem, allowing beavers to be trapped indiscriminately is not beneficial for the environment. Instead, a few humans will benefit financially at the expense of everything else.
I urge that the proposed changes are not permitted.
