The proposed changes for Trappers and Fur Dealers will create a defacto Carte Blanch for this industry.
Trappers having to report once per year about their "regulated" activities does not strike me an excessive burden, certainly much less of a burden that every taxpaying citizen of the province goes through each April. In my working experience over many years, periodic reporting on activities has provided an opportunity to refresh awareness of the ethical obligations, and in this specific case would provide the Ministry with insight into activities or individuals which warranted further investigation. As we have seen in many different industries, SELF REGULATION DOES NOT WORK, and without regular reporting that's what the Ministry will be granting to this industry.
The extension of the Trapping Season to 12 months is disturbing. If there is a problem animal, OK, but there had better be a well documented case presented before such action is taken. I see a very real danger of this morphing into an unregulated "open season", and in 15 or 20 years the Ministry will be proposing repopulation activities to mitigate the rash decisions of 2025.
