This is a step backwards. The government must provide full scientific documentation, environmental impact assessments, and data to support its claims. It should also consider extending the public comment period to allow stakeholders time to review this information and provide informed feedback.
Non-target animals including pets, have frequently been harmed and/or killed in leghold and conibear traps. This must end. Many countries have banned these traps due to how inhumane they are. Supports for the fur trade should not be at the expense of animal protection, public safety or ecological health.
Laws around trapping need to prioritize animal welfare and should be informed by current, peer-reviewed science. Beavers for example, are an important species that create wetland and regulate water systems.
Strong regulatory oversight is essential.
