You know who does special economic zones? Underdeveloped nations.
That does seem to be where this legislation will take us. To grotesque abuses of the rule of law, the rights of First Nations and of all Ontarians, as politicians bend to the will of lobbyists and 'friends'.
There is no need to ignore experts with knowledge about land use, protection of the environment, protection of the land. Absolutely no need. Ontario was failing long before Trump's tariffs -- worse housing starts in the country, highest unemployment, education and health care in tatters -- its not Trump, its a government that doesn't understand that its mandate is not profit for the private sector, it is to support the present and future quality of life of all Ontarians.
That this government is turning what should be carefully considered decisions about land use into decisions at the 'favour of the Minister' is an appalling miscarriage of justice and law. Without rationale.
We've seen it before, that's why it is impossible to trust that there are going to be adequate protections in place for considered development and land use that is in our province's long term best interests: what this legislation is enabling is political favouritism of the worst kind.
This is yet another example of breach of trust between this government and the people of Ontario.
The Auditor General confirmed the politicization and mismanagement of the Skills Development Fund; the absurd cynicism at play in the redevelopment of Ontario Place for which Ontarians are on the hook for a $2b parking lot because bad decisions were made; the Greenbelt fiasco; super mayor powers and the expansion of urban boundaries to put more money in developers' hands when municipalities should be in control of land use in their boundaries.
It is impossible to believe this legislation is being enacted in the good faith best interests of Ontario.
It is not at all about responding to Trump's tariffs. It is about cynicism...a government determined to impose the best interests of its friends on the province without care for the future of people or province.
It is simply appalling.
