As a Treaty #9 person I strongly oppose Bill 5 and I call for it to be repealed.
In 2025 it is preposterous that treaty rights would yet again be deliberately undermined and circumvented -- especially in light of the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's recommendations and Canada's adoption of UNDRIP.
Imposing the rapid installation of deregulated Special Economic Zones onto the people of Ontario smacks of authoritarian capitalism. It appears that these ‘free zones’ will entrench corporate governance into carved-out enclaves across fields/sectors of the province, with laws and tax breaks tailored for maximum corporate profit, while contributing nothing of true long-term social value to the communities or public sector as a whole.
This government must not implement Bill 5 as it violates the rule of law. This government must respect and work to advance all provincial treaty agreements and must not override legal safeguards that are key to protecting Indigenous rights, nature, and the public interest -- of which this government is in service to.
