I am writing as a resident of Lambton Shores to express my deep concern about Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. While the bill is presented as a measure to accelerate growth, I believe it poses serious risks to our environment, local democracy, and community well-being.
Here in Lambton Shores, our economy and quality of life depend on the health of Lake Huron, our beaches, wetlands, forests, and trail systems. These natural features attract visitors, support small businesses, and make this region a place where people are proud to live. Bill 5 weakens the environmental safeguards that protect these assets, opening the door to developments that could cause irreversible harm to our natural surroundings and tourism-based economy.
I am also deeply troubled by provisions that allow the province to bypass municipal bylaws and planning decisions through the creation of “special economic zones.” This undermines the ability of our local council and residents to make thoughtful, community-driven decisions about growth and land use.
In addition, Bill 5 reduces opportunities for meaningful consultation with Indigenous Nations who share and care for these lands and waters. This not only disregards treaty responsibilities but also silences valuable voices in environmental stewardship.
Our community values collaboration, transparency, and sustainable growth. I urge you to repeal Bill 5 and call for legislation that strengthens—not weakens—environmental protection, local governance, and Indigenous partnership.
