It is disappointing and alarming to discover the Provincial Government is proposing amendments to regulations under the Endangered Species Act, 2007 (ESA). The ESA is a crucial legislation designed to protect and preserve species at risk of extinction.
The proposed changes promoting streamlining are a fancy way of dressing up another attempt to bypass regulations and open the door to re-zoning ecologically sensitive land unavailable for development because it serves as a critical habitat for endangered species. The ESA was enacted by your highly respected predecessors who had the good sense to understand the importance of protecting endangered species before it is too late; endangered species are two steps away from extinction primarily due to human activities. Any actions taken to dismantle protections are reckless and short-sighted and will add to population declines.
At a time when biodiversity and habitat loss are major concerns, the Provincial Government should focus on economic incentives and policies to restore endangered species populations and address habitat loss rather than proposing regulatory amendments to the ESA that will undoubtedly put vulnerable species at additional risk.
Many species protected under the ESA have ecological or economic importance. For example, endangered plants may have medicinal properties, and endangered animals may play crucial roles in maintaining ecosystems that support fisheries, agriculture, and tourism.
The Endangered Species Act is paramount to protecting biodiversity, maintaining ecosystem services, preserving cultural heritage, and fulfilling our moral and ethical responsibilities to other species and future generations. It is in the best interests of humans to protect endangered species, including the Provincial government, instead of attempting to rewrite the regulations to suit their needs.
Dismissing necessary protections substantiated by research, science, biology, and data is not for the well-being of endangered species. Putting the ESA on the chopping block smacks of history repeating itself, as the Greenbelt deals gave us insight into who the Provincial Government is genuinely looking out for. Please protect endangered species and build on land already designated for development. Thank you for your time and consideration.
