This proposal to streamline environmental assessments is simply a way to cut corners with private developers and does not take into account the damage it would have to the environment and archaeological record of Ontario. Federal laws are in place for archaeological and environmental assessments to be conducted before development to ensure that at risk species and potential archaeological sites are protected. These assessments are necessary to ensure the survival of archaeological sites that can date back thousands of years ago, far earlier than when colonial settlers first came. Without these assessments all that data on the history of Ontario and the Indigenous peoples is lost. Especially at risk are potential ancestral burials. Ontario is rich in archaeological sites and environments and they should be assessed to ensure their survival. After all that colonialism has done in erasing Indigenous peoples history, this would be yet another step backwards in trying to right the governments wrongs against these groups. The government of Ontario needs to take responsibility for the environment during this climate crisis as well as the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples and the preservation of their cultures. This proposal goes against the wishes of the people of Ontario and is simply a way for politicians to grease more palms with developers. Stop destroying our province for your own interests. These assessments are in place for a reason and shouldn’t be revoked simply to streamline development - there is no need for that.
