The responses from the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Mississauga's of the Credit First Nation, the Ginoogaming First Nation, the Canadian Environmental Law Association, and the Municipal Engineers Association all explain how extremely concerning this recent proposal is. We must listen to their voices and their expertise.
If this passes, it will result in reduced consultation with First Nations on development projects and we will be regressing in our crucial commitments to UNDRIP and the TCR Calls to Action.
Additionally, the Ontario Archaeological Society has also called out how this proposal does not provide sufficient protection for archaeological heritage and Ancestor burials.
This proposal will remove vital requirements that will cause municipalities to fail at meeting their obligations under the Ontario Heritage Act. Archaeology cannot and should not be done without the sufficient consultation and collaboration of Indigenous Peoples. Their voices must not be ignored.
