We must reject policies that normalize cruelty and strip protections from vulnerable species. Strong, transparent oversight is essential—but the real solution is to end the fur trade altogether. It’s time to go fur-free, for the sake of animals, ecosystems, and our collective conscience.
The Ontario government must not proceed with regulatory changes that expand trapping without first providing full scientific documentation, environmental impact assessments, and peer-reviewed data. Anything less is a betrayal of public trust and a silencing of informed, ethical opposition. The comment period must be extended to allow meaningful scrutiny—because rushed decisions cost lives.
Trapping is inherently cruel. Animals suffer prolonged agony in steel jaws, snares, and so-called “humane” devices that still inflict terror, injury, and death. Laws must reflect modern ethics and science—not outdated industry interests. Animal welfare must be the foundation, not a footnote.
The fur trade’s marginal profits cannot justify systemic violence against wildlife, nor the erosion of public safety and ecological integrity. Beavers, in particular, are not pests—they are architects of biodiversity. Their dams create wetlands, regulate water flow, and sustain entire ecosystems. Sanctioning their removal during the closed season, especially on Crown land, is reckless and ecologically devastating.
