The government has a duty to ensure transparency by providing full scientific documentation, environmental impact assessments, and supporting data for any claims it makes. Without this, meaningful public engagement is not possible. To that end, extending the public comment period would be a responsible step—giving stakeholders the necessary time to thoroughly review the information and offer well-informed feedback.
Trapping laws must place animal welfare at the forefront and be shaped by current, peer-reviewed science. Decisions that affect wildlife and ecosystems cannot be justified by minimal financial returns from the fur trade, especially when they risk compromising animal protection, public safety, and long-term ecological health.
Beavers, in particular, play a crucial role in the environment. As keystone species, they help create wetlands, support biodiversity, and regulate water systems. Policies must reflect this ecological value by protecting beaver habitats on both Crown and private lands from increased or indiscriminate trapping, particularly during closed seasons when animals are most vulnerable.
Ultimately, strong reporting mechanisms and robust regulatory oversight are essential to ensure that all trapping activities meet legal standards and align with the public interest. Anything less undermines both environmental stewardship and public trust.
Is do not agree with nor condone the changes currently sought.
