Are we still living in a province espousing democratic principles? It appears not. As proposed, the regulations, instead of placing meaningful limits on the powers that the Act confers to Cabinet enhance the Minister’s discretionary power. There is no transparency, there is no accountability and no environmental protection. There are no mindful checks and balances and, as it has been the case for the Green Belt, the Science Centre, and the forever being delayed and more costly mid-town subway line, the whole thing is a cash grab for friends of the people in power. Citizens and their habitats are neglected and made to pay the price in money, poorer health and low quality of life.
