We need more public consultation on projects, not less; more consideration of environmental impact, not less; more examination of private interests being favoured. At present, the Special Economic Zones Act looks like a power grab, rather than a principled and fully considered plan for economic development to benefit people of Ontario.

As summarized by EcoJustice - "The Special Economic Zones Act, 2025 (Bill 5) gives the Ontario government sweeping powers to override environmental protections, exempt hand-picked companies from laws, and sideline Indigenous voices within “Special Economic Zones” (SEZs) — in the name of “economic growth”."

Just look at these four points about what's at stake:

"SEZs can be declared anywhere in Ontario if Cabinet believes that area is “economically significant or strategically important” and “no larger than necessary”." Where, in this, is the municipality, or community, or even elected representatives?

"“Trusted proponents” can be handpicked by the Minister with no independent checks. Whether they have a good record on environmental compliance is entirely “in the opinion of the Minister”. " That certainly sounds like an inside job.

"Designated projects within SEZs are only required to consider health and environmental risks. There’s no requirement to ensure that risk mitigation strategies actually work, and no independent oversight. " What kind of planning is that? Disasters are sure to follow.

" Despite clear feedback from Indigenous communities, the draft regulation contains no mechanism to affirm Indigenous rights or consultation requirements. " Twas ever thus - how in good conscience can this disregard for the Indigenous continue as standard practice?

I urge you to rethink the provisions in Bill 5 for the betterment of Ontario, its people and economy.
