I am strongly opposed to this proposal and would recommend that the province repeals the Special Economic Zones Act altogether.
Instead, the province should establish and maintain a transparent and consistent governance process that does not prioritize economic considerations over irreversible environmental impacts. Additionally, the province should fully implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
(UNDRIP) by establishing governance that upholds Indigenous rights first and foremost, including to free, prior and informed consent. Any amended proposal should reflect the full extent of feedback received during consultations.
There are better ways for the province to support its economic goals than to bypass any and all environmental protection mechanisms. For example, it could invest in circular economy R&D and infrastructure to keep critical minerals and other resources in supply chains, rather than ignoring risks to humans and the environment in order to permit unabated resource extraction.
