I am shocked and disturbed that the number of American eels returning to Lake Ontario from the Atlantic has declined from one million to tens of thousands in the span of 40 years. I understand that less than 100 eel came through the Saunders ladder in 2017. I think the situation for American eel is dire at this point, but the trend could still be halted and hopefully reversed if intervention is taken now. I am requesting that the government
- revise Action 7 to require specific and immediate reductions in the mortality of adult eels as they migrate through hydropower facilities
- revise Action 8 to require immediate provision of upstream passages, like eel ladders, for juvenile eels at barriers in the lower reaches of rivers in Ontario, including the Carillon Generating Facility at the base of the Ottawa River
- Under Action 9, commit to reviewing hydropower mitigation plans for American eel, and requiring revisions or revoking exemptions when hydropower production fails to take reasonable steps to reduce the adverse effects of hydropower facilities on the species
Thank you
