Legal Advocates for Nature’s Defence and the Friends of the Attawapiskat River jointly provide these comments (see attached) to the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade in response to their Consultation on Proposed Special Economic Zones Criteria, posted to the Environmental Registry of Ontario on October 2, 2025 (ERO No 025-1077).

Our recommendations reflect the principles and minimum actions we feel are necessary to safeguard and advance the protection of Indigenous rights and nature. We provide these recommendations without prejudice to our continued stance that Bill 5 and the Special Economic Zones Act ought to be repealed.
