I object to the concept of Special Economic Zones. Ontario is already losing natural areas and farmland at an alarming rate. ALL new development should be subject to careful scrutiny so that we start to conserve the natural features, wildlife and farmland that sustain us all through the provision of clean air, clean water, food, and climate change mitigation. If we do not start to apply the knowledge we have to every land-use change that is proposed, future generations, and maybe even our own will suffer the consequences of living in a land that can no longer sustain human life.
We need to reduce our consumption, confine our population growth to already defined urban boundaries, and restore woodlands, wetlands and other natural features so that they will sustain future generations.
I object to any new development being exempt from the Environmental Registry, or from public comment of any kind. With the gutting of the MNR, Ministry of Conservation and Environment, and now proposed for Conservation Authorities, public voices will be the only ones in the future to advocate for a healthier environment.
