Beavers are very important to ecosystems and preventing the spread of wildfires. Allowing beavers to be harvested in the driest part of the year is a bad idea given the number of wildfires that we have been experiencing across the country over the last few summers. I realize that this permission is being communicated as only if infrastructure is at risk, however I have serious concerns that the threshold for what a threat to infrastructure is will not be vetted due to the reduction in the reporting requirements. It seems like a lot of decisions made in favour of money over preserving the natural environment are very short sighted and seem to shoot ourselves in the foot. I do not trust that the self-reporting trappers that are pushing for a reduction in reporting to maximize profits wouldn't want to maximize profits by exaggerating the potential impact on infrastructure as an excuse to trap more beavers than necessary in the driest and most important months to have beavers. Please do not allow these changes to happen without more reporting, not less. Permission to trap in the summer must be on a case by case basis and include input from scientists. Forests will burn and people, including the forestry companies will be asking for tax money and a solution to fires. Spoiler, it's beavers....in the summer.
