It seems that the whole notion of special economic zones is anti-democratic. For example, you begin by informing us why consultation is not required. This leaves the impression, intended or otherwise, that any opposing views will be ignored. The identification of special economic zones seems designed to allow the government to bypass regulatory measures meant to ensure quality decision making. There is ample evidence that this government is lacking in this department. Just because the PC's won a majority of seats in the provincial parliament does not give them carte blanche on any particular policy. A full 57% of the people of Ontario did not support the PC platform. I realize the government can claim a 'mandate', but it should recognize and govern for all the people of Ontario.
So the major underlying question, why the rush? Premier Ford defends all of his decisions in the context of the evil Trump government. But we must pause to reflect on what is best for Ontario within the country of Canada. For example on the question of Northern development we are mainly dealing with mineral extraction in the 'Ring of Fire'. Speaking as an Indigenous person (Seneca of the Six Nation's) I am very concerned that will leave us open to exploitation once again. We will be left with a 'string of beads' and an environmental disaster. This is the record of past performance. Why should we expect the rush of Doug Ford''s anti-democratic approach to be different. We must learn to treat the land we live on with respect and to practice a circular economy where we put back in as much as possible. Until such careful innovative thinking is applied I will be opposed to any projects that arise from the special economic zone policy.
