Revoking the MCEA will leave archaeological sites, especially within municipalities without an archaeological management plan, and vulnerable to disturbance and destruction.
A checklist form cannot and should not replace archaeological assessments carried out by licensed archaeologist in Ontario. There is over 12,000 years of history accumulated in the foot and a half of soil we stand on today ignoring that will result in the destruction of that history.
These plans further reduce the environmental and archaeological protections. For a government intent on bringing jobs to Ontario eliminating an entire sector of the industry clearly only benefits those profiting from development. It's not sustainable, not practical and doesn't even benefit the supposed end user (in the case of housing development for example) with affordable housing. Developers are not going to pass any savings generated from bypassing environmental assessments on to future homeowners.
This is before even entering into the clear disregard for Indigenous Treaty rights. Removing safeguards is not progress.
