Eels are important species to our Ontario ecosystems and they need to be preserved. Legislation changes need to be implemented to preserve the population that is left. The time is now to make a change and implement policies that will result in a successful conservation story.

I am shocked and disturbed that the number of American eels returning to Lake Ontario from the Atlantic has declined from one million to tens of thousands in the span of 40 years. I understand that less than 100 eel came through the Saunders ladder in 2017.

As a graduate student in fisheries ecology, and a personal affinity for primitive species, I implore you to act on the specific action items listed below. The mitigations and resolutions to protect this species exist – immediate action is needed to ensure that they are not lost from Ontario.

To wait another 3 years to come up with a plan, is far too long to take action for this valuable creature.

Please DO SOMETHING for the American Eels before it's too late. How could such a substantial population be reduced so drastically and in such a short time?
