You know who does special economic zones? Underdeveloped nations. That does seem to be where this legislation will take us. To grotesque abuses of the rule of law, the rights of First Nations and of all Ontarians, as politicians bend to the will of lobbyists and 'friends'. Read more

We should strongly reject the government authoritarianism and secrecy that allows the arbitrary institution of special economic zones. The Ford government was elected by a minority of Ontarians and does not represent our democratic interests. Read more

We need government to STRENGTHEN * not weaken * Ontario’s environmental safeguards. We do not need an oligarch type provincial government. Despite clear feedback from Indigenous communities, the draft regulation contains no mechanism to affirm Indigenous rights or consultation requirements. Read more

Bill 5 is wrong and most responsible citizens would recognize this. We can have economic progress without trampling on sustainable requirements that benefit everyone, especially going forward into a climate change future. I am ashamed of our Premier Firs and the Conservatives in Ontario.

The Special Economic Zones Act, 2025 (Bill 5) gives the Ontario government sweeping powers to override environmental protections, exempt hand-picked companies from laws, and sideline Indigenous voices within “Special Economic Zones” (SEZs) — in the name of “economic growth”. This is unacceptable. Read more

Protection of the environment should not be subservient to whatever project the minister deems to advance economic growth. Creation of special economic zones which override environmental protection, social programs or Indigenous concerns is the wrong approach. Read more
