I am concerned that Bill 5 gives too much power to politicians to select development projects that put Ontario's air, land and water at greater risk of degradation.

The Nation Municipality appreciates the opportunity to comment on the proposed criteria for Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The Municipality supports the regulation in principle and recommends that municipally led innovation and industrial parks be explicitly eligible for SEZ designation.

Economic growth cannot come at the climate’s expense, yet this is what is happening. The criteria for Special Economic Zones are currently too vague, raising the risk that developments may bypass Ontario’s and Canada’s legal commitments to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

I do not support this proposal.
The proposal allows SEZs to be declared anywhere in Ontario if Cabinet believes that area is “economically significant or strategically important” and “no larger than necessary”. This is too much discretion and power to Cabinet, risking corruption.

It seems that the whole notion of special economic zones is anti-democratic. For example, you begin by informing us why consultation is not required. This leaves the impression, intended or otherwise, that any opposing views will be ignored.

The thing that makes us great is our land.
It is far more valuable when it is intact and diversity is maintained.
This legislation will allow developers to ignore our role as stewards.

The economy is not the most important consideration for our lives. I believe politicians have forgotten that we are intrinsically interconnected and part of the natural world. By reducing what we consider to be a 'habitat' we are putting the natural world, including ourselves at great risk.

The proposed guidelines are broad and vague, leaving them open to misuse. In light of Bill 5 and other recent blatant misappropriations of power in direct opposition to the people’s will, we do not trust the Ford government to make ethical use of any such language.
